Interview with Albert Amao Soria

Author Interview - Albert Amao Soria

                       REGAIN THE POWER WITHIN YOU

By: Von Braschler

Man alone, of all the creatures on Earth, can change his
own pattern. Man alone is architect of his destiny....”
                    – William James

Post-modern industrialized societies suffer not only from common anxiety but also from herd mentality; the mass communication has standardized how people should live, including their expectations and their outlook of life. This is part of the self-deception problem of modern societies characterized by consumerism and the economy of waste.
The book Awaken the Power Within is a bold, new book that shows how most teachers and healers in the so-called self-help arena simply dumb-down ancient insights and then attempt to repackage them in some easier, weaker form for mass marketing.
Albert Amao Soria, PhD debunks many of them and for good reason. Real self help comes from within. Real growth, understanding, and transformation come only from within you. That's what self help means. You are finding your way. You are on your own path of discovery. You are growing.
This self-help literature promise to make you rich, make you wise, make you whole, and make you over. This is nothing new, but every time one crops up to take away our pain, our worries, our insecurity, or confusion, they announce themselves as some sort of new messiah. Generally, they disguise themselves as authors, workshop leaders, teachers, or life coaches who offer self help to the ignorant fools who come to them for help. The new age is full of them. Self-improvement seminars and classes are filled with them. They offer the secret teachings of the ages. They offer to guide you in the area of self help.
Krishnamurti, an Indian sage who once led thousands worldwide disbanded his organization and sent all of his followers home. He told them that they needed to be their own teacher and their own student and that they needed to find their way on their own. Truth, he told them, is a pathless land.
That is the hero's journey of self discovery. The hero goes on a path of uncertainty, a self-directed journey. Along the way, all great heroes on the path find themselves. The journey is more fruitful and rewarding than the destination.
Mr. Amao's new book examines some of the deepest and most effective elements of self-help practice in the succession of traditional esoteric thought. He outlines a historical picture of what has worked and what has not. It's important, after all, to understand modern self-help culture from its earlier mystical and occult movements and how we got to the current interest in the power of positive thought.
But h
ere's the ugly truth that many of today's phony teachers with their magic pills and magic formulas won't tell you on their way to selling you a bill of goods or a certificate after several lessons: All real growth requires effort and struggle. It doesn't come easy. It can't. You have to feel it personally. You need to grow outside of the comfort boundaries that hold you neatly in place.
The fake teachers do not tell you how the act of spiritual unfolding is uncomfortable. It's like peeling the layers of skin around you, like the layers of an onion. You are working your way through layers of dense material form that shrouds you and conceals your inner being. Ever peel an onion? Not easy is it? And there are tears along the way. That's what it's like peeling down to you spiritual core.
O
nly you can do that. The answers are all inside you. The truth is there, too. And you will find yourself along the way.
Here find the difference between real self help and the snake-oil salesmen who offer to make our transformation easy, to bring us instantly to self-realization, and grant us enlightenment in a few easy lessons. Real healing happens from within. You can receive valuable assistance, but you must be willing to do what is necessary to heal on your own to a great degree. And you can.
I asked Dr. Albert Amao a few pointed questions about the self-help programs today and the major focus of his new book. His frank answers follow:
(Q) Dr. Amao, how would you assess the scope and problems of the self-help market in modern society?
(A) The sell-help culture in the modern developed countries around the world has become a pervasive social system. Taken as an example North America alone, this issue has become a staggering $12 billion industry. There are more than 300,000 books available on Amazon in the category of “self-help.” Given this astounding amount of literature, how can one possibly decide where to look for an authentic self-help book? We are becoming a quick-fix society. Nowhere is this more apparent than in regards to individuals who flock to programs that seek shortcuts in the hope of achieving rapid results. As we frequently see, many proponents of self-help, including advocates of positive thinking, mind/faith healing, and other fictitious techniques aimed at helping others actually focus on fattening their bank accounts as their primary purpose.
Self-help is used by some as a business enterprise. No wonder there are many bestselling books in the self-help industry that promise many wonders in a short period of time. This includes Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, and many others.
The purpose of my book Awaken the Power Within is to analyze the accuracy of self-help and positive-thinking claims and to explore what works, what doesn’t, and why.
(Q) What harm or hidden downside do you see in the popular self-help market today?
(A) Most of the time, people assume as true the recommendations given in most of these books, audio-books, and seminars. Then, when the material they buy does not deliver the benefits promised, they blame themselves and think that there is something wrong with them. Thus, their effects can be detrimental. Consequently, the self-help programs that are supposedly harmless can do more harm than good and may also reflect the social problems now plaguing our modern society.
This problem has been addressed by many authors, such as investigative journalist Steve Salerno, who wrote a book titled SHAM: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless. As the title of the book suggests, inauthentic self-help culture can result in clients victimizing themselves. Motivational speakers organize seminars and workshops, where they sell their books, audio-books, CDs, and more, charging seminar fees that range often from $500 to several thousand dollars in the case of Tony Robbins. The same can be said regarding some Christian ministers motivational speakers who use their popularity and their church platforms to indirectly promote their books and audiotapes. Furthermore, Salerno pointed out that market surveys revealed "the most likely customer for a book on any given topic was someone who had bought a similar book within the preceding eighteen months." Since a person did not find what he/she was looking for, he/she kept searching for another book, audio book, or CD. Or sometimes they enroll in future seminars and workshops in an endless search for self-help.
HOW THIS HAPPEN IN OUR MODERN SOCIETIES
Those self-help gurus who have access to mass communication such as TV and radio have tremendous power to influence naïve and uninformed people. The self-help industry is infested by life coaches but not by authentic self-help providers.  Thus, self-help gurus promote self-victimization. In other words, they advocate the idea that people have problems in adulthood, because they had been victimized in early childhood. The theory is that their inner child has been traumatized by past events. That becomes a negative "tape" that replay over and over in their subconscious minds. They then tell people that redemption comes through empowering themselves with new "life scripts," which are their books, CDs, DVDs, seminars or workshops.
SO, WHAT IS THE REAL ISSUE
The real issue is these “gurus” are selling themselves as healers and projecting their own shortcomings on their clients. The gimmicks used to sell self-help material and workshops may provide people with temporary relief, but this does not last much. They offer only a momentary boost of inspiration that fades away after a few weeks, turning buyers into repeat customers.
IN A FEW WORDS WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL OF YOUR NEW BOOK?
The main goal of this book is to raise awareness about the modern “snake oil” peddlers who take advantage of gullible people. Again, they sell the idea of victimization. Once the client accepts the idea that he or she was victimized in his early life, the next step for the self-help agent is to propose the idea of empowerment with their techniques.
Someone accurately posited the inquiry: Why is it called "self-help" if one has to pay for it?
In this environment, as sociologist and cultural critic I feel is my duty to have the courage to clear the air and put things into realistic perspective. Millions of people are wasting time, money, and energy buying ineffective and detrimental systems.
(Q) Then what sort of real self-help do you advocate as authentic and effective today?
(A) We can’t throw the baby out with the bath water. It is imperative that we rescue authentic self-help from the business mindset. Contrary to critics who blithely dismiss self-help methods, or New Age gurus who sell them as miracles, the book Awaken the Power Within explores the conditions under which self-help is authentic and effective.
There is a pattern of powerlessness among common people. From early childhood we have been disempowered and indoctrinated with false ideas and beliefs about our true nature. Currently, quantum physics and metaphysics are fully demonstrating that humans are the creators of their own reality and destiny.
The problem is that we took for granted the false beliefs of self-worthlessness and lack of confidence from our parents, grandparents, mass media, and so-called “conventional wisdom.” And with time, these inherited beliefs of disempowerment became part of our personal belief systems and we subconsciously create a wrong self-image of ourselves.  This set of ideas and beliefs is generally oriented to make us feel powerless and victims of circumstances. It seems that there is a huge conspiracy to inflict a sense of powerlessness on humans.  Moreover, some religious organizations create a sense of guilt on humans because Adam and Eve commit their original sin.
The mass media is basically oriented to manipulate and domesticate ordinary people, creating superficial and unnecessary needs. Most people’s behaviors are based upon the actions, decisions, and opinions of others. Under this scenario come false New Age “gurus,” some Protestant religious leaders, and sensationalistic and fake self-help authors to take advantage of naïve people to financially profit from them. They offer a panacea or “snake oil” to solve all humans’ problems under the name of self-help. They demand that people uncritically believe in them, their products, and services.
My book clarifies the concept of “self-help” as a mental self-discipline that some people abuse for the sake of entrepreneurship. It surveys the main assumptions of inauthentic self-help culture that keeps humans enslaved in a herd mentality and demonstrates how real power dwells in the individual and only in him or her.
(Q) What are the major objectives or aims of your new book?
(A) The primary purposes of the book Awaken the Power Within are as follows:
· To raise awareness about modern “snake oil” peddlers who take advantage of gullible people for financially benefit.
· To elucidate manipulation with false ideas through TV, radio, and newspapers
· To analyze the pseudo self-help movement in America and discuss what makes it a “cotton candy dream.”
· To empower people to rely on themselves and their inner strength for guidance.
· To review the history of the New Thought movement and its offshoots.
· To make sense of positive thinking
· To explain how intentions and the power of assumption play active roles in shaping the future
· To explain the nature of reality, consciousness, and awareness.
 (Q) What was your basic goal in writing the book?
(A) This is the message of my book in one paragraph: To raise awareness about the gimmicks of inauthentic self-help entrepreneurs and empower people in their search for true sources of help. Humans have the inner capacity to confront any difficult circumstances in life. There is no need for external intervention. People are responsible for creating their own reality with their thoughts and beliefs; and they are the only ones who can take back their power and correct whatever is not working for them. The book offers a deeper perspective on the culture of self-help and self-improvement and empowers us to rely on our inner voice as a source of motivation for authentic self-empowerment and self-reliance. It's time that you begin your own hero's journey of self-discovery by awakening the power within.

The Secret of Healing Without Medicine Unveiled©

The Purpose of the book
                                                                                    “Physician heal thyself” (Luke 4:23)
In former times, cures that occurred in shrines, cathedrals, old temples, and evangelical crusades (tent revival meetings, healing camps); faith healing, spontaneous remissions, and inexplicable medical recoveries were considered “miracles” or exceptional occurrences beyond scientific explanation. The cure was credited or ascribed to a saint or a relic, or it was supposedly the result of the intervention of a healer, hypnotist, priest, shaman, minister, etc.; who usually had a reputation of having charisma and prestige in the healing business.
The aim of the book, Healing Without Medicine: From Pioneers to Modern Practice, is precisely to find a rational and scientific explanation for those cases. The main hypothesis of this book is that all methods of mind/spiritual healing are self-healing. Man has an inner capacity to heal himself. It is said that the effectiveness of healing with medicine is due to the fact that medicine and other medical implements remove obstacles that enable the body’s recuperative capacity.
I also have examined the exceptional healing of the most prominent contemporary religious leaders of the New Thought Movement, who recovered their health by mental and spiritual means from supposedly “incurable” diseases, and I elicit the mechanism that triggered their healing. The book also explains why some people do not respond to any kind of treatment whether with medicine or without it.
 Historical Background
The phenomenon of mental/mind healing started in the mid 1800’s with a layman known as Phineas P. Quimby (1802 – 1866); he was an unschooled clock maker in New England,[1] who after curing himself without medicine, reached the conclusion that negative beliefs create most human illnesses.
Quimby was diagnosed with a terminal illness by the medical profession of the time; his kidneys were disintegrating and he was also suffering from tuberculosis. Disillusioned with life he abandoned his successful business and retired to his farm expecting to die. To make a long story short, he healed himself with the help of his assistant Lucius Burkmar and discovered what is called Mental/Mind healing. Subsequently, he started curing all kinds of diseases by just changing the frame of mind of the sick person. Then, Quimby came up with bold concepts such as:
a)      Man creates his own illness in his mind. Change the beliefs and you will cure the disease.
b)      Illness is an invention of man and has no bearing in the spiritual realm.
c)      Illnesses are embraced in our belief, and so forth.
In time, Quimby became known as the father of the New Thought Movement, which is a movement that advocates healing by mental and spiritual means; they resort to the Bible and the teachings of Jesus to support their doctrine. Quimby believed that he rediscovered the method Jesus used to heal people, and freely gave his curing technique to anyone interested in it.  Some people who were healed by Quimby became his disciples and also began practicing mind healing on others; that was the beginning of a new way of thinking known as “New Thought Movement.” Thus, the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth centuries saw a boom in New Thought churches with practitioners spread all over America and abroad. They were devoted to healing without medicine based on the teachings of Quimby. Nowadays there are hundreds of such organizations and churches thriving around the world, including Religious Science, Divine Science, Unity Church, Science of Mind, Quimby Memorial Church and other offshoots in addition to Christian Science.
New Thought is a new way of understanding the world and the position of man in the world. It has been appropriately called an “American practical spirituality.” The beauty of this practical American philosophy is that it empowers man as the creator of his own reality and circumstances of life. The basic postulate of the New Thought is that changing the frame of mind of an individual can change his reality. New Thought ideology is been the origin of Positive Thinking and other programs of enhancing human potential. Moreover, the application of these metaphysical principles as inspirational tools has been proved to be of extraordinary value to achieving success in all areas of life.
The major contribution of these leaders and their organizations to the welfare of  humanity is that millions of people around the world have benefited, recovering their health free of medicine; in some cases, the healing was not only circumscribed to the body but had a ripple effect on their mental and spiritual wellbeing.  Additionally, the application of these principles as a motivational device has been shown to be of extraordinary incentive toward achieving success in all areas of life: material prosperity, relationships, and peace of mind.
 The Mind and Spontaneous Healing
My investigation of this matter and based on my own experience led me to believe that people can be restored to health using the power of their minds. Modern mainstream medical circles are gradually accepting the mind-body relationship in the healing process. In addition, Medical doctors are now propounding a more humanistic and holistic means of healing rather than clinging to the old traditional and materialistic conception based heavily on technology and chemicals. This is exemplified by the medical profession’s incorporation of techniques such as meditation, yoga exercises, unconditional love, fasting, etc. The interesting thing is that this phenomenon of healing without medicine continues developing today in America through the emerging practice of what is called Energy Psychology, which includes Thought Field Therapy and its derivatives such as Emotional Freedom Technique and other similar modalities.
The capacity of the body to regain health by itself has been called spontaneous healing or inexplicable remission. The problem is that most of time when people develop symptoms of an ailment instead of seeking detoxification and cleansing the body to give it an opportunity to recuperate its balance, we usually rush into taking harmful medication and drugs that debilitate the body’s immune system; under this condition the body is subject to be attacked by microbes, germs, and virus. They are three fundamental concepts for any healing to take place:
The mind is the charioteer of the body. This is called mind-body medicine.
  1. The human body has the capacity to regain health by itself.
  2. Most of the healing with or without medicine is due to placebo effect.
The irony is that most people get sick due to a negative suggestion given unintentionally and sometimes with “good intentions” by family members, teachers, and neighbors, who believe that sickness is normal and that we will all be affected sooner or later. The same message is conveyed by the news and the mass media, and by the publicity generated by companies that manufacture prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical companies expend billions of dollars in proposing illnesses with every change of seasons; it also encourage people to have surgeries when most of the time these are not needed. Most of these people believe on this advertisement which usually is endorsed by medical doctors; this is potent suggestion for unaware individuals. Another indirect way of promotion is through medical doctors; pharmaceutical companies often give doctors free samples of prescription drugs to encourage physicians to prescribe them.
 Healing Suggestions
One of the conclusions that I reached in my studies on this topic is that the healer and whatever technique he practices only gives the patient a suggestion (or placebo).  In other words, the healer impresses a “healing suggestion” upon the mind of the individual. Furthermore, the so-called “miraculous healings” that take place in religious places such as the Shrine of Lourdes, old cathedrals, etc.,  are plain and simple “collective suggestion;” I call this the phenomenon of an “Egregore.”[2] Therefore, the person who takes on the role of healer actually does not do the healing per se; he or she only activates the inner mechanisms within the sick person for the healing take place. In other words the healer’s effort is a placebo in action. In these cases, the subconscious mind needed the incentive, the “push” to active the healing power of the body. It also very important, the positive expectation and desire of the sick person for the cure to happen; in other words, his/her belief will do the work.
Hence, the effectiveness of a placebo lies in the fact that bypasses the conscious mind and instills a positive healing suggestion in the subconscious mind. The role of a real healer is to bring the sick person from a place of fear to a place of empowerment.
To the question of why people get cured with different methods or therapies, consider the old saying,“Different strokes for different folks;” this encapsulates the idea. There is another aphorism, “One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” In the healing realm works the same principle. A specific therapy that is effective for one person may not be so for another. Among all the healing modalities on the market, one will fit the specific individual needs and the healing will follow. The above is also true in the medical field where different medicines work for diverse kinds of ailments; a specific medication that is beneficial to someone could have negative consequences on another. Likewise, varied kinds of complementary and alternative therapies work for different people; this is because everybody is unique and has special idiosyncrasies and predispositions.
 Complementary & Alternative Therapies (CAM)
In the realm of “complementary and alternative medicine” (CAM), sometimes the impressive and confidence of the healer can influence positively the sick person, or could be the specific treatment he practices. This is in accordance with the principle that every human being has psychological dispositions to respond positively or negatively to different kinds of treatments. It is well known that some people feel relief from their maladies by writing journals or poems, others by dancing, or being close to nature in a forest; for those who are inclined to religious or spiritual practices, engaging in praying, contemplation, spiritual retreats or reading biographies of saints and spiritual topics will do the job. Others are inclined to ascetic practices, and for them, fasting and meditation are good alternatives. Some people have gotten well just by being cheerful, laughing at funny movies or TV shows, reading the cartoons of newspapers, such the American editor and author Norman Cousins.[3]
One question remains, why is it that people are not healthier in our society where medical technology and medicine have made huge progress? My take on this that in our modern materialistic and consumerist societies, it appears that there is a huge conspiracy to keep humans into misery, illness, and suffering. The main reason for this is that there is a social consensus that covertly holds the thesis that getting sick is natural, that is part of being human. This “conventional wisdom,” in reality is not “wisdom” at all but half-trues that humans take for granted. This “conventional wisdom” leads humans to believe that when we get sick, it is because the illness runs in our family, or it is in our genes, or it is due to the change of seasons, and so on. We have been socially indoctrinated that drugs and medication are the solution. This idea is supported and emphasized by the mass media. In addition, pharmaceutics companies spend billions of dollars in well-crafted advisements to promote their medicines.
Man as Charioteer of the Body
The way to counteract this social suggestion (or egregore) is to acknowledge that the mind is the charioteer of the body, that the body has capacity to heal itself, and to redirect the mind from a negative condition to uplifting and constructive ones. The metaphysical conception is that we live in an ocean of pure electromagnetic energy called ‘Life-force’ energy or ‘universal consciousness.’ This school holds the theory that this Life-force energy is available for anybody. Indeed we have been using it all our lives through our thoughts and emotions. The problem is that man is unaware of this and misdirects this energy to negative thought and feelings, such as anger, resentment, hate, envy, etc. and in doing so, he builds a shield of negative energy around his body that prevents the free flow of the Life-force through his body. Thus, the body becomes depleted of the vital life-force and becomes predisposed to the invasion of viruses, germs, and microbes from the external world.
The right use of this Life-force is to get in attunement with the feeling of peace and love for ourselves and humankind; this will activate one’s inner mechanism and allow the life-force to flow through his or her body. The results will be reflected in a balance and harmony with one’s inner nature and with the corporeal body. This requires gaining access to our inner Self, which has been overshadowed by the influence of the material world and the demands of the physical senses.
The metaphysical truth is that thoughts and feelings create our reality. Whatever one’s subconscious mind accepts as true will take place in his or her reality sooner or later. Think of illness as imminent and as a natural thing, and you will get it. Maintain an optimistic attitude, and things will work out favorably. You have the power under your belt to control what kind of ideas are running through your mind. Therefore, it is recommended that instead of dwelling on depressing and negative thoughts, a person should feed his or her subconscious mind with constructive and uplifting thought-patterns and the result will be the crystallization of those thoughts into his or her reality. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”(Proverbs 23:7 - KJV).
 CAM & Placebo
Healing Without Medicine also analyses most of the alternatives and complementary therapies in America and provides coherent explanations for their success and failure. Regarding this aspect, R. Barker Bausell, Ph.D., a retired University of Maryland professor and Research Director of the National Institutes of Health-funded Complementary and Alternative Medicine program wrote a book entitled Snake Oil Science: The Truth about Complementary and Alternative Medicine, where he makes a comprehensive investigation of most of the complementary and alternative therapies in the market. The author claims that he penned the book after he had enough scientific evidence to permit a rigorous evaluation of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). He concludes that all complementary and alternative therapies are only placebos. He closes the book with the following two statements:
CAM therapies are nothing more than cleverly packaged placebos.
And that is almost all there is to say about the science of CAM.[4]
Dr. Rick Ingrassi complements the above idea when he says, “Theplaceboeffectoffersdramaticproofthatallhealingisessentiallyself-healing.[5]Another M.D., Bruce Moseley, a celebrated orthopedic surgeon, conducted a study regarding the effectiveness of placebo on people with debilitating knee pain. He concluded: “In this controlled trial involving patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, the outcomes after arthroscopic lavage or arthroscopic débridement were no better than those after a placebo procedure.”[6] In lay language the result of the surgeries he performed were no better than the result of the “fake surgeries” that patients were told to believe were performed.
Bausell’s book is well documented by many years of research and written at a rigorous academic level and endorsed by physics professor and medical doctors; however, and there is always one however, he neglects to consider the tremendous ability of the human body to regain its health; a phenomenon that medical scientists refer to as “spontaneous healing” or “spontaneous remission.”
 All Placebos are Hidden Suggestions
My take on the issue is that the placebo effect can only be understood in psychological and metaphysical terms. The effectiveness of the placebo resides in the capacity to make the patient believe that something was done. Indeed, a placebo is a suggestion that bypasses the conscious mind and instills a suggestion in the subconscious mind; once the subconscious mind accepts the suggestion, the healing process will occur as long as the patient has an authentic desire to get well. Thus, all placebos are hidden suggestions; they change the expectation of the subject from a mindset of illness to “get well”. There resides the whole matter.
The issue is also in the patient’s belief, if the individual does not believe in the practitioner or in the treatment the placebo will not work and the healing will not occur. The reason that different therapies work for different people is because one will “strike a chord” with the patient and activate his subconscious mind. The whole matter of the placebo effect comes down to make the individual’s belief. Ultimately the patient heals himself with the help of a placebo which acts as “psychological support.”
My definition of placebo among the thousands already formulated is that placebo is a psychological phenomenon, a concealed suggestion that is conveyed to the patient through means such as pharmacologically innocuous substances, complementary and alternative therapies, New Thought modalities, and so forth, with the aim of making the patient believe that something was done to alleviate his or her ailment. That is, to change his/her mindset from the state of illness to the state of healthiness whether by using fake medicine, CAM, or positive thinking. Once the belief is accepted by the subconscious mind, the healing occurs.
Interestingly, Bausell offers scientific evidence to corroborate the ideas expressed in my book. Furthermore, another scientist in the medical field, Edzard Ernst, M.D., Ph. D., and his team researched of CAM for 20 years have arrived at the same conclusion as Bausell.  Ernst asserts that even some conventional medical procedures are placebos.[7]
